Late night Exclusive by the Hack live from Alea Casino Glasgow
Eaglesham Amateurs speedy striker Michael Gowans showed the style that has terrorised opposition defenders all season as he strutted his funky stuff on the cat walk at Glasgow's newest and exclusive nightspot - Alea Casino. Gowans (21) made the Radio Clyde model of the year 2008 final selection, and came oh so close to grabbing the winning slot. Gowans narrowly missed out on the crown after a day of cat walk practice, followed by a series of make up and fake bake that appeared to be right up the Mearns youngsters street.
The night was compered by a famous big nosed baldy chap, but this wasn't Duck drunk up the egg on a saturday night. No siree this was the real thing with Radio Clyde Breakfast DJ George Bowie wowing the crowd in this no expense spared extravaganza. The chips were down at this stage and i'm not talking about a couple of the bigger lady contestents gullet.
The velcro headed youngster drew the short straw and was second down the walk of shame with fear written all over his fake baked coupon. He was a little flushed as he stepped out wearing a natty going out piece that had the ladies quivering at this feet.
Next up, the boy about town look was carried off with aplomb. It really was russian roulette at his point and easy to see even to the untrained eye, that the smart money was on a two way fight between Eagleshams Mikey and bitter rival Calum. Mikey, or to use his stage name, Mike was revelling in the competition but muscley Calum was favourite in the summer wear category as Mike failed to shine with his spangly midgey bitten legs.
It was now imperative Mike came out fighting and that he did by playing the joker in the evening wear section which must have impressed the judges. Mike gambled with a lovely pair of farah trousers, coupled with a silk shirt and caftan neckerchief. It was a look that wowed the onlookers, and was only slightly marred with the runny mascara and overuse of the blusher.
And so the judges left the arena to ponder their decision. All bets were off as the crowd held their breath waiting for the cards to fall. As the hack was fending off the amorous advances of Daily Record stylist and model Julie Hannah, the contestants waited anxiously backstage. Mike, demonstrating his poker face, confessed to the Hack that he was nervous but confident of victory. It was a nail biting final few minutes, but alas as the votes were counted and it was clear that Calum had victory in his grasp.
And so it transpired that Mike was edged out into second place, the die was cast, and the modelling contract was lost for good.
How good as Mikey on the night? Well it was a gamble for the cocky youngster:- he may well be able to get up on the stage at a Hammies event in front of the Joey Bairds & puggys of this world, but this was a whole different ball game. Just a few short weeks ago the dressing room in which Mike was changing was being used by such luminaries as Rhidian from X factor fame and famous Glaswegian comedian Des Pants McLean. The room where he was being asked to perform was the scene of Barry Ferguson's 30th birthday party.
In the Hack's modest opinion Mike deserved to scoop first prize, but the nerves seemed to get the better of the assistant shop keeper, and it really was all lost on a spin of a wheel. From humble beginnings do great dreams grow however and perhaps one day Mike's dream really will come true.
Hack.
